110 in the Shade
Book by N. Richard Nash, Lyrics by Tom Jones, Music by Harvey Schmidt, Orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick, based on the play The Rainmaker by N. Richard Nash.
In this co-production with Seattle Public Theatre, Reboot brings to life 110 IN THE SHADE, a beautiful exploration of love, hope, and acceptance.
Constrained by the conventions of a small western town besieged by drought, Lizzie Curry has reached a boiling point, and longs for an honest and true connection. Lizzie's family thinks the recently widowed sheriff is the perfect candidate. However, a charismatic stranger arrives claiming the ability to make it rain; catching the attention of Lizzie and the entire Curry family. Suspicious, Lizzie tries to pick apart this stranger’s story but along the way, realizes a deeper truth about what it means to love.
110 IN THE SHADE is a prime example of one of Reboot’s core beliefs, “be who you are and become who you want to be”. That is exactly what is happening in 110, the realization and acceptance of ‘being’. Not only in ourselves, but in those around us.
To help express this core belief and in true Reboot fashion, we have pared down the musical to its emotional core. We focus on the humanness of each character, flaws and all. We explore gender stereotypes by honoring the complexities of these characters - their history, dreams, and desires - and find minor nuances and subtle variations in the meaning of scripted lines to allow a fluidity that may not have been known or welcomed in the original version.
